Western Poem: Wind in the Hills By G.C. Stevens

Wind in the Hills

An unusually warm February day in the hills north of the Iowa. A dusty sky against a brilliant yellowing sun, masked by soil loosened to the wind; the hills across the bare winter plain. The road paved its way into Conrad; the town appeared in the distance as the old cemetery came into sight. A church steeple down the road, some unpaved streets, a ghost of the past partly trapped in time. The old town struggles to meet the new day; small shops, a grocery store, a post office, and a grain elevator all tell the story of a farm town somewhere north of the Iowa River.
